Are you interested in connecting with other horsewomen who are pursuing thoughtful, effective horsemanship?

Welcome to the Ethos Equine Online Community

If you could use some support and friendship on your horsemanship journey, then the Ethos Equine Community is for you. If annual or bi-annual clinics are just not enough for you, then the Ethos Equine Community is here for you.

Ethos Equine is a community of compassionate, effective horse people with a devotion to horsemanship and open, inquiring minds. It’s a place for people who are humble and courageous in their efforts to master the concepts of “feel, timing and balance” in order to create extraordinary partnerships with their horses. In this community, your horse always comes first.

The Ethos Equine Community is a safe, supportive space where you can ask questions, post videos, and get instruction and feedback directly from Kathleen, as well as the support of other Ethos subscribers.

Meet Your Mentor:

Kathleen Beckham

I grew up dreaming of horses, doodling pictures of horses and reading every horse book our local library had to offer, several times over. Once my mother agreed to weekly riding lessons, they became my obsession. I bought my first horse at age 13, and started showing hunters and jumpers shortly thereafter. I spent my teenage years at horse shows, and upon my graduation from high school, took a position as a head trainer for a small, private hunter jumper barn.

At age 28, my entire life was put on hold when I suffered a stroke. I had to give up my job at the hunter-jumper barn, as I dedicated myself full-time to my recovery. When I returned to my horse life, it became clear to me that I was going to have to learn a new (to me) way to work with horses, because I wasn’t as strong or as coordinated as I had been before the stroke. I was going to have to work WITH the horses, because I could no longer afford to work against them. That’s when I discovered classical horsemanship, and in that discovery, I reconnected with my “why”.

My “why”? I’ve always seen horses as intelligent, willing, pliable, hard working creatures. What I saw at horse shows and in horse training didn’t always align with that. What I want to do is to work with horses in a way that honors their nature as herd and prey animals, that honors their history as hardworking, human-civilization-building animals, and that taps into the spiritual and emotional connection that horses and humans can offer each other.

My passion for horses is not voluntary, it's how I'm made. My superpower is taking intangible things like ‘feel’ and other large topics in horsemanship, breaking them down into actionable parts, and putting them into words. For me, horsemanship is a practice, an art, and a very unique and personal journey.

You’re not interested in half measures and quick fixes. You’re in it for the horse and you give your horse your all. You’re willing to do the work, but you don’t always know what ‘the work’ exactly is in the moment!

You show up for your horse, again and again, but you’re afraid of getting it wrong. So sometimes you don’t do anything at all, paralyzed by self-doubt. Perhaps your lack of confidence is further fueled by friends or critics at the barn who criticize anyone who is doing things differently than they are.

You know that the process of making a good horse changes us. It changes the horse, and it changes the human. But when your annual or bi-annual clinic high wears off, it’s just you and your horse.
